I support the thrust by Ray Earwicker whose letter on Council finance was published in The News on 28 January. Nevertheless the main cause of the financial difficulties of the Conservative Bracknell Forest Council is the missing £4 million that was strangely “invested” with the bust banks in Iceland. I call for an investigation as to how that Council decision came to be taken.
I must point out one difficulty in Mr Earwicker’s letter. He demanded higher Government payments to local authorities. Of course if that happened then our UK taxes would rise and residents would merely have to pay up that way instead. Mr Earwicker needs to say that he is actually calling for higher rates of UK taxation.
